Some companies are pushing for a big increase in the cost of carpet.
They want to make it a commodity, and they’re asking consumers to pay more.
Recode is looking into the issue.
Reporter: In an effort to help consumers find the right carpet for their home, a few big carpet retailers are going after some of the big players in the industry.
They’re raising prices.
We have the biggest increase in carpet price in our lifetime.
And the other companies are not doing anything.
It’s a little bit of a chicken and egg situation, because one company will say it wants to make carpet cheaper, the other company will not.
And we have to wait and see what happens.
Reporter, Rachel Raskin, Recode Capital Markets, Inc.: This is a chicken-and-egg situation.
And I think they’re just saying that we’re too competitive, that we don’t have the resources.
Recoding’s Raskins say that when it comes to pricing, there’s no magic formula to determine what the right price is.
The average price of a carpet is around $100 a foot. Reporter
